  • For the possibility of beauty being either the First or the Second Hypostasis cp. I, 6.9.40-43. In the great work III, 8 (30) – V. 8 (31) – V.5 (32) – II.9 (33) beauty is firmly identified as on the level of οὐσία, the Second Hypostasis. V. 5. 12 brings out the difference between this and the First particularly sharply. For the “shining” of beauty on the Idea see VI. 7.21-22. Cp. my “Beauty and the Discovery of Divinity in the Thought of Plotinus” (Plotinian and Christian Studies XIX).
