La question de la subjectivité est par excellence la question que se pose la philosophie contemporaine : une subjectivité décentrée, ouverte et problématique, où le rapport au monde et aux autres se fait question et enjeu. Le dialogue que la philosophie contemporaine a entrepris avec les sciences sociales a permis d’en entrevoir les problématiques ethnologiques, anthropologiques, sociologiques, psychologiques, et ainsi d’enrichir l’approche de la subjectivité pour mieux comprendre des problématiques contemporaines fondamentales telles que la migration, le genre, la santé. Dans le cadre d’un dialogue pluridisciplinaire, ce séminaire interroge les diverses façons dont le phénomène religieux, dans toute sa pluralité, informe les enjeux de la subjectivité (agissante et passive, construite et engagée). Pour ce faire, nous adoptons une double perspective : d’une part il s’agira de faire le point sur les concepts déjà disponibles dans la tradition, au croisement des sciences sociales et de la philosophie (puiser aussi bien chez Kierkegaard que chez Hegel, chez Max Weber ou Heidegger, chez Émile Durkheim ou chez Michel Foucault, sans s’interdire de s’aventurer en terrain théologique), afin de mettre à l’épreuve religieuse la question de la subjectivité ; d’autre part il sera question de développer des outils conceptuels adéquats aux modes de subjectivités religieuses contemporaines – i.e. les différentes manières pour la subjectivité de se rapporter au divin –, afin d’enrichir le sujet (non sans le déséquilibrer fortement, quitte à le remettre en question) des manifestations diverses du transcendant et de l’immanent, et de faire du phénomène religieux une dimension cruciale de son existence.
Ce séminaire donnera la parole à des chercheurs et chercheuses en philosophie, sciences sociales et théologie. Chacune des séances sera consacrée à une thématique spécifique où le rôle du religieux dans la réflexion contemporaine sur la subjectivité sera interrogé. Parmi ces thématiques, on abordera par exemple le rôle du sacré dans la constitution de la subjectivité, les subjectivités face aux nouvelles transcendances, le renouveau de formes théologiques inscrites dans les formes mondialisées de capitalisme, ou encore la dimension théologique de l’intelligence artificielle.

The Philosophy of Early Christianity

This new edition introduces the reader to the philosophy of early Christianity in the second to fourth centuries AD, and contextualizes the philosophical contributions of early Christians in the framework of the ancient philosophical debates.

It examines the first attempts of Christian thinkers to engage with issues such as questions of cosmogony and first principles, freedom of choice, concept formation, and the body–soul relation, as well as later questions like the status of the divine persons of the Trinity. It also aims to show that the philosophy of early Christianity is part of ancient philosophy as a distinct school of thought, being in constant dialogue with the ancient philosophical schools, such as Platonism, Aristotelianism, Stoicism, and even Epicureanism and Scepticism. This book examines in detail the philosophical views of Christian thinkers such as Justin Martyr, Clement of Alexandria, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen, Basil, and Gregory of Nyssa, and sheds light in the distinct ways they conceptualized traditional philosophical issues and made some intriguing contributions. The book’s core chapters survey the central philosophical concerns of the early Christian thinkers and examines their contributions. These range across natural philosophy, metaphysics, logic and epistemology, psychology, and ethics, and include such questions as how the world came into being, how God relates to the world, the status of matter, how we can gain knowledge, in what sense humans have freedom of choice, what the nature of soul is and how it relates to the body, and how we can attain happiness and salvation. This revised edition takes into account the recent developments in the area of later ancient philosophy, especially in the philosophy of Early Christianity, and integrates them in the relevant chapters, some of which are now heavily expanded.

The Philosophy of Early Christianity remains a crucial introduction to the subject for undergraduate and postgraduate students of ancient philosophy and early Christianity, across the disciplines of classics, history, and theology.

This book is a philosophical study of two major thinkers who span the period of late antiquity. While Plotinus stands at the beginning of its philosophical tradition, setting the themes for debate and establishing strategies of argument and interpretation, Proclus falls closer to its end, developing a grand synthesis of late ancient thought. The book discusses many central topics of philosophy and science in Plotinus and Proclus, such as the one and the many; number and being; the individuation and constitution of the soul, imagination, and cognition; the constitution of number and geometrical objects; indivisibility and continuity; intelligible and bodily matter; and evil. It shows that late ancient philosophy did not simply embrace and borrow from the major philosophical traditions of earlier antiquity—Platonism, Aristotelianism, Stoicism—by providing marginal comments on widely known philosophical texts. Rather, Neoplatonism offered a set of highly original and innovative insights into the nature of being and thought, which can be distinguished in much subsequent philosophical thought up until modernity.

Is music just matter of hearing and producing notes? And is it of interest just to musicians? By exploring different authors and philosophical trends of the Roman Empire, from Philo of Alexandria to Alexander of Aphrodisias, from the rebirth of Platonism with Plutarch to the last Neoplatonists, this book sheds light on different ways in which music and musical notions were made a crucial part of philosophical discourse. Far from being mere metaphors, notions such as harmony, concord and attunement became key philosophical tools in order to better grasp and conceptualise fundamental notions in philosophical debates from cosmology to ethics and from epistemology to theology. The volume is written by a distinguished international team of contributors.

Stoics’ social oikeiōsis (affiliation) to other humans

Description et organisation

According to the ancient Stoics, an individual feels affiliation towards his or her own body, and then for other humans in concentric circles of more or less proximity. Care for offspring is natural, equally among animals. Care for those further out calls for our effort, but the Stoics prescribe it. The Stoics encourage each of us to pull the circles of others closer towards ourselves at the centre and provides techniques for doing so. Oikeiōsis will also help social legislators. During a pandemic there is more need than usual for affiliation. Others may, for example, need food, services, or teaching delivered at home.
